A large selection of keyboard layouts is installed with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Generally, you should configure your keyboard layout in Windows to match the actual keyboard that you use. If you can choose a different layout, be aware that the keys on your keyboard may display different characters than those that appear on screen. To configure your keyboard to use a different language or keyboard layout, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows.

Click Start , type intl. On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards. In the options , click View Layout to compare the layout with the actual keyboard. Note The Language bar appears on the taskbar. When you rest the mouse pointer over this bar, a tooltip appears that describes the active keyboard layout. In the Input language list, select the language that you want.

For example, select French Canada. In the Select one of the installed input languages to use when you start your computer list , click French Canada — Canadian French , and then click OK. Click the Language bar, and then click French Canada.

Match the keyboard on the screen with the physical keyboard to make sure that the layout matches. To check the uppercase characters, click the shift key on the keyboard or on the screen, and match the characters printed on the keyboard. If you have not installed English United States follow these steps to install it. I would also suggest you that now the Windows 10 is installed, ensure to install all pending updates and also update all device drivers including optional updates.

Once this is done restart the pc and check the status. Currently, Australian is the default, but having US as the default makes no difference. I do not want US English as the default. I have a Dell keyboard, US format. By the way: The buttons under the language ONLY appear when you click on the language, so without this procedure, the user has to guess that something is hidden there – really poor design, not intuitive and not user-friendly.

Again, really poor design – why not have at least one permanent button labelled ” Check or change settings “? After rebooting the computer, the keyboard mapping problem always reappears, so my fix is ineffective!!!

Surely, somewhere among your community of experts, someone has come up with a proper solution to this problem. Many other users have reported it on the net, but I have not seen a workable solution described.

I myself reported the problem to Microsoft by phone in early December , and the fixes another Microsoft employee tried over a call lasting about an hour including having access online to my computer did not work, except his last one, that worked only until the next reboot – so, although I have no idea what he did, it was probably exactly what I described above.

I had not pursued the issue for 5 weeks while travelling. While I can hardly claim that this is a serious problem, it is irritating enough to be annoying, and for Microsoft not to be able to fix it in the long period since the OS was released, undermines Microsoft’s credibility. Can we really rely on this operating system? Updates are additions to software that can help prevent or fix problems, improve how your computer works, or enhance your computing experience. Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. You have not provided a solution. Nor have three of your support engineer colleagues to previous attempts to get this fixed, or to numerous other peoples’ attempts that I have seen on this website – and none of you, quite frankly, seem to be taking any serious interest in getting to the root of the problem.

What all the many users with this problem need, is a solution. We would rather not be spending our time and yours on this frustrating problem. As the issue still persist, I suggest you to start you system in safe mode and check if the issue persist.

Step 1 : To start your system in safe mode follow the below steps:. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program. Disclaimer: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you. Unlike Word and Edge, which start up and immediately shut down, Msconfig does nothing at all. Apparently, he had not tested his own procedure before recommending it to me. I wonder whether he is even using Windows 10 where he is? Then this is what I did – and it did permanently apparently fix the problem :. Many thanks for your suggestion. I have deleted both of those UK keyboards, so hopefully, when I reboot tomorrow, the problem might be fixed.

Nevertheless, under this UK English setting, typing gives , gives , and ” gives “, so it’s very likely that you have found the solution for me. How or why the UK keyboard setting got there, I have no idea.

I have never owned a UK keyboard. Threats include any threat of suicide, violence, or harm to another. Any content of an adult theme or inappropriate to a community web site.
